French planes have joined efforts to put down wild fires at Bulgarian-Greek border

The range of the fire on the Bulgarian-Greek border has increased overnight. The fire has crossed the protective clearing over 2 places into Bulgarian territory but has been contained, authorities said.

All teams have been mobilised and are sending people to the fire because strong winds continue to worsen the situation on the ridge of the Slavyanka mountain in the Ali Botush nature reserve.

For more than 10 days, teams on both sides of the furrow have been unable to tackle the flames. Because of the danger of mines exploding, the fire is being extinguished only from the air.

Two French airplanes joined the extinguishing effort as early as Monday evening, interim Interior Minister Kalin Stoyanov said on Facebook. The French firefighting planes were accompanied by a third one for reconnaissance.

"I express my gratitude for the quick response of the French teams," the minister wrote.
