Parliamentary party with two chairpersons floods Central Election Commission with complaints as elections approach

The Central Election Commission is receiving many more complaints than in previous elections from representatives of a parliamentary party with two chairpersons, the spokeswoman of the institution Rositsa Mateva told BNR. The two wings of the formation are challenging the appointments of members to local election commissions.

"There are more than 40 nominations for representatives to the Sofia election commission alone. The requests are to withdraw documents submitted by the other chairman," explained Rositsa Mateva.

Regarding the lifted immunity of a deputy candidate from one wing of the same party, the CEC spokesperson said it was not a problem for the October 27 elections. 

"There is no case so far in the practice of the CEC in which a candidate has been denied permission to be detained or to be charged. We do not believe that we are within the CEC's powers to judge the evidence that the prosecution has gathered," Rositsa Mateva said. 

In her words, the fact that a candidate's immunity has been lifted does not mean that he or she does not continue to participate in the election campaign and cannot become a deputy.
