If Google could talk – what were Bulgarians excited about in 2024?

In 2024, Bulgarians actively used the Google search engine to get informed about topics reflecting what was happening in the world and in this country. Bulgarian athletes once again proved that they can inspire and arouse national pride. That is why sport has emerged as the big winner in the internet space. The European Football Championship in 2024 topped the ranking of the events that interest us the most.

The Olympic Games in Paris also ignited passions and made us "roam" the web in search of information about disciplines such as synchronized swimming, combined climbing, archery and sailing.

But sport did not only triumph in stadiums and television screens! It also took a permanent place in our hearts. Our world weightlifting champion Karlos Nassar was the most searched name in the personalities category, followed by gymnast Boryana Kaleyn and boxer Kubrat Pulev. Our Olympic medalists Magomed Ramazanov and Semen Novikov also made it to the top of searches.

The Paris Olympics shifted attention from politicians to athletes. Not to mention that the parliamentary impasse in Bulgaria has pushed people away from politics. This explains why only two politicians made it into the top ten of the most searched personalities on Google in 2024 – these are the former Bulgarian European Commissioner Mariya Gabriel and Donald Trump. Bulgarian actress Nona Yotova also made the list, due to her participation in a popular TV reality show.

Speaking of personalities and heroes – we Bulgarians love to watch not only sports, but also movies! The biographical hit "Gundi: The Legend of Love", dedicated to Bulgaria's football legend Georgi Asparuhov aka Gundi, took first place among movie titles, followed by another Bulgarian title - Diada - which appeared at the end of 2023. And what can we say about international productions such as "Dune: Part Two" and "Inside Out 2", which also kept us on the edge of our seats... and at the computer keyboards!

What happened in the world of music last year? Surprise! Folk star Tony Storaro overtook Ed Sheeran as the most sought-after concert in Bulgaria. Lili Ivanova, Andrea Bocelli and Preslava were not far behind - each with their loyal fans and... searches on Google.

And what does a Bulgarian do after a good concert or an exciting movie? Well, cook, of course! "Dubai chocolate" became the star in our culinary searches in 2024, followed by sweet temptations such as kun aman, millefeuille and traditional Bulgarian skalichki. Because we love to indulge and enjoy the delicious moments in life.

And finally – practicality! The "how" questions ranged from "how to boil an egg" to serious topics such as "how to manage my credit", "how to quit smoking" and the current one in 2024 "how to vote correctly". In this regard, concepts such as "morality", "populism" and "cynicism" have excited us to such an extent that we actively search for their specific definitions on the web.

So if Google could talk, it would probably conclude that in 2024 Bulgarians were looking for inspiration, entertainment, but also a stronger connection with our national identity and value system.
