Government mulls strategy to modernize Bulgaria's irrigation systems

Increasing the areas with an installed irrigation system by over 2.5 million decares with the goal being to reach 8 million decares in the long term - this is envisaged in a strategy prepared by the office of Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev.

According to the management of the state-owned company "Irrigation Systems", a large part of its facilities have not been repaired in the last 60 years, which leads to many accidents and water loss.

To implement the prepared strategy, at least 400 million leva are initially needed. However, such funds were not included by the caretaker government in the draft budget for 2025 presented before the New Year. This is making Bulgarian farmers think about new upcoming protests, BNR reporter Vesselina Milanova reported.
