New draft law proposes markup cap on food products

A draft law has been prepared with the aim of regulating the relations along the entire chain from food producers to buyers. It proposes markup limits, to which both producers and traders would be entitled, announced Bulgaria’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Georgi Tahov.

"In any case, this will have an impact on prices. We propose that the main players in the chain have maximum markups- producer, middleman, processor, food chain. A large part of the added value remains with the retailer, while less and less remains with the producer and the processor", commented Minister Tahov.

The decision to draft the law came as a result of a boycott by civil organizations against the food chains
