Farmers' union urges action to support agriculture

In an open letter to Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov and the Ministers of Agriculture, Finance and Economy, the Bulgarian Farmers' Union calls for new financial mechanisms to support, revitalise and stimulate Bulgarian agriculture. The appeal is driven by political and economic pressures, as well as climate-related challenges. The union highlights the lack of sustainable policies to create and support a new, young generation of agricultural producers and farmers, which has been identified as a key priority by the European Commission.

"The long-standing trend of bankruptcy, abandonment and destruction of local producers - whether for objective or subjective reasons - is leading to the disappearance of entire industries, breeds and varieties with national identity and significance. We are witnessing whole families and regions losing their livelihoods, their work and their way of life built up over generations," the union stresses.
