The balances in all bank accounts in Bulgarian levs will be automatically converted to euros from the date of the country's accession to the eurozone at the officially announced exchange rate (1.95583 BGN = 1 EUR). That will be done free of charge, the Association of Banks in Bulgaria told BTA following the positive assessments by the European Commission and the European Central Bank regarding Bulgaria's readiness to join the eurozone as of January 1, 2026.

The Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) will exchange BGN for EUR free of charge, in unlimited amounts and with no time limits, said BNB.

Other banks and "Bulgarian Posts" will exchange currency free of charge during the first 6 months from the date of the euro's introduction in Bulgaria. For transactions exceeding 30,000 BGN in banks, a prior request will be required. At "Bulgarian Posts," for amounts between 1,000 and 10,000 BGN per day per person, a prior request will be required 3 to 5 business days in advance.
