The evacuation of Bulgarian and foreign citizens from Israel was carefully planned by Bulgarian diplomats in Sofia and those on site, Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov announced at the beginning of the government meeting, BNR reporter Tsvetelina Stoyanova announced.

Early this morning, 148 people, of whom 89 are Bulgarian citizens, arrived at Sofia’s Vasil Levski Airport.

“Citizens, employees, people from all professions, as well as diplomats – I would especially like to thank the Foreign Ministry, as well as the Bulgarian diplomats, the Bulgarian services,” the Prime Minister said.

Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev explained that the route from Israel via Egypt was preferred over the one from Jordan.

“Safety was of utmost importance because shelling is taking place on Israeli territory and we had to guarantee the safest route possible for the vehicles with the evacuees to pass,” the Minister said.

He added that emergency hotlines and the coordination center continue to work for those in need of assistance "in a very complicated situation that we will continue to monitor."
