The National Social Security Institute pays 16,000 out of the total of almost 2 million pensions to Bulgarians abroad. The biggest number of Bulgarian pensioners lives in Germany – 4,100. There is one Bulgarian pensioner living in South Korea and one – in Iceland.

75,000 Bulgarians receive pensions from countries other than Bulgaria, National Social Security Institute governor Vesela Karaivanova says in an interview with trud.bg. They also receive Bulgarian pensions but have spent part of their lives working in an EU member country, or another country Bulgaria has a social security agreement with. Germany is the country from which the highest number of Bulgarians receive a pension – 12,500, followed by Spain – 11,300.  10,200 retired Bulgarians receive pensions from Greece, 8,600 – from Italy, 5,900 – from Russia, 5,400 – from Great Britain, 3,200 – from Czechia, 2,900 from Cyprus, and 2,300 – from Austria.
