For the first time Bulgaria is hosting a world judo championship, BGNES reports. At the opening in Asics Arena in Sofia, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Stoyan Andonov described this as a massive token of recognition for the Bulgarian Judo Federation and for the country.

More than 500 contestants from close to 70 countries will be competing for the prizes in the individual events until 30 August, and the team competition will take place on 31 August. Bulgaria is represented by 26 contestants – 13 boys and 13 girls.

Deputy Minister Andonov handed the first medals to the winners in the under-60 kg cadet category. The gold went to Yernur Batyrgali (Kazakhstan), the silver - to Loiq Kudbudinov (Tajikistan), and the bronze medals - to Zeyd Alasgarov (Azerbaijan) and Dilshod Karimov (Uzbekistan).
