20 nominees from 11 countries – that is the number of contenders for the “Bulgarian Woman of the Year 2024”, named in honour of Saint Zlata of Meglen. The award has been presented every year since 2009 by the Executive Agency for Bulgarians Abroad (EABA).

Regular Radio Bulgaria listeners will already be aware that the award is open to women from Bulgarian communities abroad who have contributed to preserving the Bulgarian national identity and cultural heritage among our compatriots worldwide through their dedication and activity. Nominees are women who uphold Bulgarian national dignity, support the development of Bulgarian associations abroad and take part in charitable and humanitarian initiatives devoted to Bulgaria. They also promote Bulgarian culture, historical heritage and traditions in their respective countries.

Nominations can be submitted by Bulgarian associations abroad and their partners in Bulgaria, Bulgarian media outlets at home and abroad, or initiative groups of compatriots in Bulgaria and overseas who have come together to support a particular candidate.

Rayna Mandzhukova
"From that point on, everything is in the hands of the seven-member jury. The chair of the panel is historian Prof. Plamen Pavlov, with whom the IABA established this award back in 2009," explains the Agency’s Executive Director, Rayna Mandzhukova. "The jury includes Prof. Ana Kocheva from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Tanya Mihaylova, Director of the Diplomatic Institute at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Snezhana Yoveva-Dimitrova, Director of the State Cultural Institute at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It also includes the Directors-General of the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) and Bulgarian National Radio (BNR).

Believe me, it’s no easy task to take on this responsibility, and for the second year running the choice has been very difficult. Each member of the jury has their own favourite and their own arguments, but in the end they reached a decision on who should receive the main award. Since there are always several nominees who reach the final stage, we introduced a rule last year: the jury can allow the Agency to give additional awards to other finalists, recognising their achievements in specific fields."

Their names will be announced at a special ceremony on 15 October at 13:00 in the Maxima Hall at the University of National and World Economy. As before, this year's official ceremony will be held under the patronage of Vice President Iliana Yotova, who will present the prestigious award.

Rayna Mandzhukova also drew attention to the regulations governing the award, which have been questioned by some of the contenders.

"I was criticised that some Bulgarian women didn’t even know they had been nominated, which cannot be true, because we announce the deadline for submitting nominations. This usually happens at the end of February. Once the deadline has passed, we notify both the nominator and the nominee that they have been nominated. The rules also allow either the nominee or the nominator to withdraw their candidacy for any reason. We had a case like this last year, when a woman withdrew for personal reasons. Anyone is free to decide whether they want to receive an award – we have tried to anticipate every possible situation."

During the event at the University of National and World Economy, the results of the public online vote, held in September on the IABA website, will also be announced, revealing who has been chosen as the "Audience’s Favourite Bulgarian Woman of 2024."

Ms. Mandzhukova also made another important clarification regarding the award introduced last year. "The purpose of this distinction is to highlight and recognise the contributions of other members of Bulgarian communities abroad, beyond the main nominees for Bulgarian Woman of the Year," she explained.

"The profile of the nominated compatriots, from near and far, is diverse and reflects the development of Bulgaria’s policy regarding Bulgarians abroad," Manjukova added.

Nevenka Kostadinova

'It's only natural that we have many accomplished Bulgarian women in the field of education. As in previous years, there are also many nominees involved in folklore. Before Bulgarian schools were established abroad, most of the nominees were involved in organisational work. However, once Bulgaria began paying more attention to Bulgarian Sunday schools, many of their leaders and teachers started appearing among the nominees. Of course, there are exceptions — for instance, last year, Nevenka Kostadinova received recognition for her work dedicated to protecting human rights and promoting Bulgarian identity in Bosilegrad. I am delighted by the diversity of the nominees and by the growing popularity of our award," Rayna Mandzhukova told Radio Bulgaria on the eve of the prestigious ceremony.
