Commissioner Georgieva accepts nomination for UN Secretary General

Hours after the Bulgarian government announced that it had transferred its support to the nomination of European Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva for the position of UN Secretary General, Georgieva said that she accepted the nomination as a great honor and with full awareness of the great responsibility of this position. She went on unpaid leave and in October will not be performing her duties as a commissioner, nor will be using other material resources of the European Commission, it was reported. Georgieva’s responsibilities for budget and human resources in the EC were taken by German Commissioner Guenther Oettinger.
