The results from the evaluation of the plan for Bulgaria’s regional development in the period 2005-2015 suggest that all regions have made progress in their social and economic development but despite that intra-regional and inter-regional differences have continued to grow. The Southwestern region alone has been steadily increasing its share in the national GDP while all other regions’ shares have declined, the report reads. The concentration of European fund assistance in some points of the country and the insufficient resources in other regions have caused demographic processes to worsen and have triggered depopulation of small towns and villages. Many of Bulgaria’s regions fall in the category of EU regions lagging behind in their development.
