Four Bulgarian Presidents unveil plaque to President Zhelyu Zhelev in Veselinovo

Bulgaria’s head of state Rumen Radev unveiled together with President Petar Stoyanov (1997-2002), President Georgi Parvanov (2002-2012) and President Rossen Plevneliev (2012-2017) a plaque to the first democratically elected President of the Republic of Bulgaria Zhelyu Zhelev (1990-1997) in front of his native house in the village of Veselinovo. President Zhelev remained a selfless democrat during the transition period when huge hopes collided with harsh reality and idealists were supplanted by cynics, Bulgaria’s President Rumen Radev said. President Zhelev was a convinced European from the generation of Helmut Kohl and Francois Mitterrand who defended peace, solidarity and unity in Europe, President Radev further said.
