The Bulgarians spend under 30% of their incomes on food, data of the National Statistical Institute show. In the past 10 years food costs decreased at the expense of higher spending on taxes and social security. Meanwhile, food costs rose by 41%, spending on house maintenance and bills increased with 67.5%, and spending on taxes and social security increased more than three times. In 2018 the cost per person increased with 10.6%, whereas incomes rose by 7.6% only. The national statistics also shows that the money spent by the Bulgarian citizens last year was 30% more than the total volume of declared incomes, but analysts contend that this margin is covered mainly by the money sent by the Bulgarian emigrants to their country.
