North Macedonia should work to build trust with Bulgaria

The statement of North Macedonia’s President Stevo Pendarovski on Gotse Delchev would have been impossible some years ago, Bulgaria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva said. Now, the Bulgaria-North Macedonia Joint Commission on Historical Issues has to agree on a text based on the common celebrations and above all on a change in their textbooks, Minister Zaharieva noted. There is still a lot to be done to build full mutual confidence. Tension will erupt every now and then, if their textbooks continue to bend the truth about our common history. What is important is that we are in a dialogue and this tension can be solved if we tell the truth, Minister Zaharieva added. Recently, North Macedonia’s President Pendarovski determined as undeniable the fact that Gotse Delchev declared and identified himself as Bulgarian, but that he also fought for independent Macedonia.
