Bulgaria's Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev described the legislative changes by force of which the Witness Protection Bureau in Bulgaria went under the management of the Ministry of Justice as "off the cuff". In his words, the transfer of powers over the Bureau from the Prosecutor’s Office to the Ministry of Justice will increase the risks faced by protected witnesses.
Ivan Geshev stated that it was not clear exactly how the Bureau would be transferred from the Prosecutor’s Office to the Ministry of Justice and how protected witnesses would receive effective protection during the transition period.
