For the period of the past 20 years, domestic crime rate in Bulgaria has halved. This is shown by the data of the Centre for the Study of Democracy (CSD) and the police statistics.

"Still, the feeling of insecurity, the fear of crime remain high. Every fifth respondent indicates that he or she feels insecure," Atanas Rusev, director of the Security Program at the CSD, told BNR. In 2020, a decline in domestic crime was recorded and it is not unique to Bulgaria. This is due to the side effects of the pandemic and the fact that many people stay at home, Rusev added.

For the first 10 months of 2021, the police also reported a decrease in crime by 8% compared to the same period in 2020.

Meanwhile, according to police data, there were 21 more homicides as compared to the same period last year.
