The construction of a tunnel through the Kresna Gorge is the most expedient and environmentally-friendly option for the route of the Struma Motorway, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Environment Borislav Sandov has told BNT. In the area of Kresna, the route cannot be a real highway, but rather a high-speed road, Sandov added.
The high-speed road cannot pass through the gorge itself, because this would be in violation of environmental legislation. The section must pass through a bypass or tunnel. The construction of a bypass is cheaper, but would generate more carbon emissions. That is why, according to Sandov, it was best to build a tunnel. The options will be discussed with Minister of Regional Development Grozdan Karadzhov.
