Bulgarian Police intercepted a van with 37 illegal migrants on Struma motorway near the town of Pernik. The detained young men said they were nationals of Afghanistan. The Sofia-plated van was driven by a 20-year-old Bulgarian with a criminal record. The driver was remanded in custody.

"The group was under permanent monitoring and the detention was controlled. We have set up police checkpoints where we pull vehicles over without unnecessary risks", caretaker Minister of Interior Ivan Demerdzhiev said.

At the end of January, a group of 31 illegal migrants, again from Afghanistan, were detained in Pernik.
