Constitutional Court to rule on rejection of euro referendum

Photo: BGNES

Constitutional Court will hear the case on the Parliament's resolution that rejects the holding of a national referendum on the euro changeover. The proposal of the referendum was to keep the Bulgarian lev as the only official currency until 2043.

The Constitutional Court judges made the decision unanimously at the request of 49 deputies from Vazrazhdane and There is Such a People parties.

The majority in parliament voted against the request for a referendum on the grounds that by joining the EU Bulgaria had agreed to join the eurozone.

The positions of the interested parties have to be collected before the CC can rule on the case. The procedure usually takes at least two months.
