MPs reject amendments on gender reassignment for children in first reading

The National Assembly has rejected in first reading the five proposed amendments to the Child Protection Act. The most controversial proposals relate to gender reassignment for children under the age of 18. The bill by "There Is Such a People" (ITN) calls for a complete ban on the procedure, while the bill by "We Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria" (PP-DB) proposes to allow it on the basis of a medical recommendation in cases of serious risk to the child's health and life.

The PP-DB said that they didn't want to get involved in non-existent issues, but in the light of the events surrounding the "Vazrazhdane" bill on so-called LGBT propaganda, they felt the need to take action to minimise the damage caused by the ITN proposal.

Toshko Yordanov
Commenting on the fact that PP-DB MPs voted against their own proposals, ITN's Toshko Yordanov said: "I voted 'yes' to give moral support to the sexually unorientated group that proposed the law and to show that sexual disorientation leads to emotional disorientation, because they are proposing something that they themselves cannot support afterwards".
