Gagauz Bulgarians from Moldova and Ukraine seek Bulgarian citizenship

Photo: archive

“The narrow interpretation of the concept of Gagauz Bulgarians, as set down by the Ministry of Justice, hampers the restoration of the Bulgarian citizenship of the Gagauz in Ukraine and Moldova. Issuance of Bulgarian citizenship is frequently denied because the narrow interpretation is that the legal requirements do not explicitly set down the concept of Gagauz Bulgarian by origin. Such interpretations imply that the Gagauz in Bulgaria who are here and who have never emigrated anywhere are not Bulgarian. But some of the members of the Association of Bulgarians in the World are Gagauz by origin too, that is why we are again raising this question with such urgency,” said Hristo Hristov, chairman of the World parliament of Bulgarians which held its 11th session at Golden Sands on 3 and 4 May, 24chasa.bg reports.
