Fourth air ambulance helicopter arrives in Bulgaria

Bulgaria has received its fourth air ambulance helicopter. “The new aircraft will be based at the Georgi Benkovski Air Force Academy hangar in Dolna Mitropolia. From there, it will serve a wide regional area and make a significant contribution to the development of air emergency medical services in the country,” the Ministry of Health said.

A fifth helicopter is expected by the end of the year, with the remaining three planned for delivery in 2026. Similar aircraft are already operational in Sofia and Sliven. Meanwhile, construction of hospital helicopter pads continues, with plans to equip 18 state medical facilities.

The first Leonardo AW109 Trekker arrived in February 2024, marking the launch of Bulgaria’s national air ambulance service. The programme was created under the country’s Recovery and Resilience Plan, with funding provided by the European Union.
